Seven Dolors is named for the Seven Sorrows of Mary, which are:

The Prophecy of Simeon - Mary suffered grievous pain in her maternal heart when, presenting her Son to God in the temple, was told by Simeon that her Son “was set for the fall and for resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which should be contradicted, and that a sword would pierce her own soul.”

The Flight into Egypt - Mary sorrowed when an angel commanded St. Joseph to take her and the Divine Child into Egypt to escape persecution and death.

Jesus is Lost in Jerusalem - Mary suffered great anguish when seeking her Son, lost in Jerusalem for three days.

Carrying of the Cross - Mary’s maternal heart bore agony when she saw her innocent Son seized and bound like a criminal scourged, crowned with thorns and then made to carry His heavy Cross to the place of execution.

Death of Jesus on the Cross - The cruel sword pierced Mary’s heart, when at the foot of the Cross, Jesus, forsaken by all, mocked by the crowd, in torment and agony, died on the Cross in her sight.

Mary gazes on Jesus’ Lifeless Body - Bitter anguish was in Mary’s heart when she gazed on the lifeless body of her Son and beheld His cruel wounds.

Jesus is Laid in the Tomb - Mary had great sorrow in her heart when Jesus was laid in the tomb.
